summary
Toyota Motor Corporation, commonly known as Toyota, is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi, Japan. Founded by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937, Toyota is the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, producing about 10 million vehicles per year. The company was originally a spinoff of Toyota Industries, a machine maker started by Sakichi Toyoda, Kiichiro's father. Toyota is part of the Toyota Group, one of the largest conglomerates in the world. The company developed its first product, the Type A engine, in 1934 and its first passenger car in 1936, the Toyota AA. Toyota benefited from Japan's alliance with the United States post-World War II, adopting The Toyota Way and the Toyota Production System, which transformed it into an industry leader. The Toyota Corolla, developed in the 1960s, became the world's all-time best-selling automobile. Toyota was the first automaker to produce more than 10 million vehicles per year. It has been praised for its development of fuel-efficient hybrid electric vehicles, like the Toyota Prius introduced in 1997, but criticized for being slow to adopt all-electric vehicles. As of 2022, Toyota produces vehicles under four brands: Daihatsu, Hino, Lexus, and Toyota. It holds stakes in several other automakers and has manufacturing joint ventures in various countries. Toyota is listed on multiple stock exchanges, including Tokyo, where its stock is a component of the Nikkei 225 and TOPIX Core30 indices.
